On May 29, 2020, it was announced that it would be entitled Panko the Dragon, with Jackie Chan will be played as Panko.

On March 23, 2021, it was announced that Maya Erskine, Christina Hendricks, Hailee Steinfeld, Dylan O'Brien, Ken Jeong, Greg Proops, Jamie Chung and Lizzie Waterworth were joined the cast.
Due to Netflix's acquisition of Vivo, Sony confirmed that Jackie Chan would not be receiving his role as the voice of Panko the Dragon as a English dub. The role was given to John Cho as a English dub.

Release[]
Theatrical and streaming[]
Panko the Dragon was originally scheduled to be theatrically released on February 5, 2021, by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was then delayed nearly a year to May 7, 2021, as a result of Jerry's friendship separation and then July 30, 2021, to avoid competition with The Mitchells vs. the Machines, in response of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and then delayed to August 20, to avoid competition again with Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. Due to Netflix's acquisition of Vivo, Sony announced to push forward to July 2, 2021 in Canada with John Cho replaced Jackie Chan as Panko the Dragon.
In December 2020, Netflix acquired international distribution rights to the film, excluding the United States, Canada, and China and will be released internationally on Netflix on July 23, 2021.
Marketing[]
On October 23, 2020, the film's first teaser poster was released, while the teaser trailer debuted the following day.
